How to Clean Moldy Tents | Useful Tips
Sep 19, 2023
Tents are our shelter during camping and outdoor activities. After prolonged storage or use in wet environments, tents may have problems with mold growth. Mold not only gives tents an unpleasant odor, but can also pose a health risk. In this blog, we will share some effective methods and useful tips on how to clean a tent with mold.
Prep:
Before you start cleaning your tent, make sure you have the following items:
- Warm water and neutral detergent
- Rubber gloves and mask
- A soft brush or sponge
- White vinegar or oxidizer
- Clean towels and fresh water
Cleaning outside the tent:
First, find a spacious outdoor area. Spread the tent out and remove the tent canopy. Use a hand brush or soft brush to remove any large pieces of mold or dirt from the tent. Then, using a mixture of warm water and a neutral detergent, gently wipe down the exterior surfaces of the tent. After thoroughly cleaning all affected areas, rinse the tent thoroughly using fresh water.
Cleaning the inside of the tent:
For the inside of the tent, start by hanging the groundsheet in a ventilated area to dry. If there is mold on the groundsheet, gently wipe it down with warm water and a neutral detergent. Rinse with clean water at the end of the base cloth wipe down. For tent interiors, clean with a solution of warm water and a neutral detergent. Gently scrub the affected areas with a sponge or soft brush. Make sure the inside of the tent is thoroughly cleaned and then wipe it down with water.
Mold Removal Treatment:
If mold is still present, try the following methods:
- White Vinegar: Mix white vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio and spray the area affected by the mold. Let it sit for a few moments, then wipe it down with water.
- Oxidizer: use an oxidizer to remove mold according to product instructions. Remember to wear gloves and a mask when applying and follow proper application methods.
- Drying and Storage:
- After cleaning your tent, make sure it is completely dry. Dry the tent in a cool, ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Once you have ensured that the tent is completely dry, fold it and store it in a dry place away from moisture and mold.
- Remember, the best way to prevent mold growth is to keep your tent dry and well ventilated. Try to dry your tent after use and avoid storing it in a humid environment for long periods of time. Regularly inspecting and cleaning your tent will help you keep it clean and durable.
