1.Review from Customer "talktob":

"This is an upgrade from my 14 yr old dome tent. My first impression was that it is light and small compared to my old 4 person dome, not quite backpacking light weight. The new style "preying mantis" looking poles are a bit intimidating the first time you open them, but once they snap together it is very easy and obvious how it attaches to the tent (and color coded to make it idiot proof). In case you still get confused, REI put the directions with pictures attached to the bag (see photo) - no way to lose it like a paper manual. Set up (1st time) was under 10 min., taking my time and including the rainfly. If you skip the rainfly, just the tent and poles can be popped together in a couple minutes. The stakes are nice. They are a thicker diameter aluminum, as opposed to the thin wire ones that just bend with minimal resistance. In fairness, the ground was wet the my only uses, so I've only lightly tested them so far. This is a nice looking tent if you care about things like that, especially without the rainfly. If you don't care about privacy and it's a nice night, the openness of the mesh is nice. It is very roomy for a tent of this style. The photo of the inside I attached shows a full size air mattress, with still plenty of room for my son's sleeping pad too. Overall, this is a quality made product with some nice thought out details. It kept us dry on a soggy ground. Looks and feels like"

2.Review from Customer "MamaB":

"Took my kids camping in Wisconsin...a bit humid and rainy but the tent was dry...until we got in and went to sleep. Condensation was so bad that it soaked all three of our sleeping bags on the top. Condensation drips from multiple places on the top of the tent and doesn't roll down the sides of the rain fly. The vents were closed the first night so I opened them the second night and the exact same thing happened. No rain overnight but our sleeping bags on the top were soaked again. Unfortunately I got this exact tent at the garage sale - brand new with the complaint of bent poles and now have an expensive piece of junk I can't use in MN or WI. I don't recommend this tent to anyone that is going to camp anywhere with any amount of humidity."

3.Review from Customer "Gabe1942":

"I purchased the 2017 model. It replaced a 2009 model that had just worn out. The poles are much more awkward then the previous models. but seemed to work well. I like the opening and it only takes a few minutes to set up once you have done it several times. I give it the lower review because the elastic string that holds the poles together has already worn out after several uses, and by several I mean three. The previous model sting worked until I got rid of it and I used the tent several times a year. I would probably go with another tent company, since the warranty on the REI brand is only good for a year."

4.Review from Customer "SOBeing":

"Bought the 2016 version at that time. My family of four has been comfortable in it since that time. It’s one major flaw has been addressed with the D shaped door opening in the fly. Previous version either had rain leak in or you got soaked by condensation trying to open the fly. Good deal for the money. We have used this tent from in kinds of terrain and all kinds of weather. With approx 50 nights of use over the last couple years it was still water tight enough to withstand a couple inches of standing water thru a night with two inches of rain on Oregon’s coast last week. It’s a W for us."

5.Review from Customer "taylor":

"I bought this tent right before Memorial Day and have been so happy with this purchase. I went on a backpacking trip to Utah and Arizona and the tent was a beast against the sand, wind, and rain. I was so impressed it was able to handle the high winds and rain. We were in the middle of a downpour and nothing inside the tent or touching the walls got wet. There is so many storage spots that everyone in the tent is able to store their glasses, headlamps, etc. I've used it countless weekends in the mountains here in Colorado and it's been magical. I would recommend this test to anyone!! I love it."

6.Review from Customer "Jill":

"We used this tent on a recent bike-packing trip. It rained on the first night. We woke to a wet floor under our pads. It was almost soapy. In addition, the interior corners seem to be delaminating. I wanted to make sure we had set it up right (that user error wasn't the issue) so when we came home I set it up in the backyard (optimal conditions - completely flat, plenty of room to stake it out, etc). Even with nothing in it, the interior floor edges were still wet after a rain. We obviously can't trust this tent."

7.Review from Customer "brom99":

"Thought we’d Love this tent, with all it’s good reviews....the tent a family of three plus dog could use car camping and backpacking! But the second car camping trip in the Sierras, d r y weather, all awoke to drip drip d r i p in the face, or on the neck, (or in the fur). As experienced backpackers, we thought we could fix the problem by changing the staking, making sure the fly was taught, vents were already open, but no. Three mornings of waking to dripping water. Can only imagine it dripping worse in humid climates. Netting was also a little snagged in places when we first took it out of the bag and only got worse with use. Returned. Still searching for a decent family tent."

8.Review from Customer "Charlie":

"I bought this tent to meet the needs of our growing family, replacing our old Half Dome 2 from 2008. This past week we took our new tent up into the High Country of North Carolina. There was episodic rain for the first 48hrs. During this time the bottom of our tent began to emit a soapy discharge. The floor began to leak even while using the appropriate footprint and guy lines. There have been noticeable changes in the manufacturing of REI tents over the past decade. This is still a good tent, however I feel as though it falls short of what REI has produced in the past."

9.Review from Customer "Pancho":

"First night in Santa Fe...monsoon with high wind heavy rain pea size hail...tent didn’t budge...no rips or tears...not a drop on the inside...next night clear skies no rainfly beautiful view....easy setup and take down....great car camping tent...highly recommend"

10.Review from Customer "Neff":

"This was a good tent for three years of moderate use. It packs small and light enough for family backpacking trips and has a good amount of room. Durability is a problem, however. The rain fly zipper is sewn in at the bottom and ours ripped out on one of the doors and the zipper pulled apart in the wind. Seriously, REI, you couldn't put a zipper tab on this thing?"

11.Review from Customer "Hiker879":

"After pitching the tent once in the back yard to test it out, I noticed that the poles are bent. The fly was very tight to get on and perhaps that was related to the poles being bent. The poles on my REI Half Dome 2 Plus from 2014 are still straight after years of being well used. Based on other comments on here, REI seems to have changed the pole system on these tents since then, maybe for the worse. I will be trying the tent a few times to see if it's still usable with the bent poles. I may have to return it. It's a pity because the tent seems very good and exactly what I was looking for, otherwise."

12.Review from Customer "freesteveman":

"I bought this tent to use when hiking with my children. It is not too heavy for backpacking. This tent is easy to set up and accomidated three plus our gear with no issue, four if you store your gear outside. I was able to use it recently on a trip out west and am very happy with its performance. Two people can set this tent up in less than five minutes. I do recommend this tent for people who are looking for a larger tent to accomidate several people while backpacking."

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the REI Half Dome 4 Plus proves to be a strong candidate for those in need of a spacious and dependable tent for group or family camping trips. With its enhanced interior space, durable construction, and practical design features, the REI Half Dome 4 Plus addresses many common needs of campers, from easy setup to weather resistance.
