1.Review from Customer "ExiledMainer":

"We have been using it for three years camping in Shenandoah NP. Colour coded tabs, poles make it easy to set up in the wind, stays up in the wind and rain and really nice with pockets (for glasses), hooks for light, and vestibules (makes it easy to take boots or shoes off and on). The roof vents are a nice added touch for ventilation. Don't forget to order the footprint for additional ground protection. We downsized from the big family tent to this for the two of us ... its height and width make it easy to get dressed in. We have had other tents in our life but this is by far the best so far!!!"

2.Review from Customer "campgirl123":

"I bought this tent a few months ago and have used it about five times now. The first time I used it was on the coast of a small island and it really stood up to the powerful winds coming off of Lake Michigan. It rained a lot each time I've used it and there have been no leaks!! The most people that have slept in it were 3, with thermarest mattresses and larger rectangular sleeping bags. Our gear was kept in a friend's tent as we didn't want to keep it in the vestibule. All of the other trips it has been on it has only held two people, and along with gear it was very roomy!! So by my standards it's really a two person tent, but it is great quality and will hopefully hold up for many years!!"

3.Review from Customer "RichJ":

"We use this tent for backpacking with our two boys & dog who are 10 & 12. We all fit in just fine, with air mattresses and sleeping bags. We leave the packs and boots in the two vestibules, or under a separate tarp we bring. The gear lofts and pockets inside are awesome, and keep things really well organized. The single pole design is great, and I don't see why some people here have negative reviews of it. My kids have no problem pitching this tent. The weight is awesome for a four person, and you won't find much better for the price. Seems to be good quality so far. Had some nights in the 40s in the mountains and we all stayed warm in there. Have not had any major exposure to windy conditions yet, but it seems similar to other tents I have that hold up well. I would buy a few extra stakes for the guy lines. Other than that awesome tent."

4.Review from Customer "DMoe":

"Bought this tent for backpacking to replace my Kelty Grand Mesa 4, and I am very happy with the tent. My camp-mates include me, my wife and our two pre-teen boys. The four of us fit in the tent with our self-inflating pads and pillows with plenty of room to spare. The tent packs up very small and light, and unless you're willing to pay several hundreds more to save a few ounces of packing weight, this is the best you'll probably find for a tent fit for backpacking with a small family. We've only camped in 45-60 degree awesome California weather so far, and rain has not been an issue so the only time that the fly has been attached was while we were doing a gear check at home. The tent was more than adequate for sleeping in without the fly, but of course your experience will vary depending on where you plan on using it. The pockets in the tent ceiling and near the doors made organizing keys, lights and small miscellaneous items very easy, and the zippers and all the other components of the tent seemed to work solid. I like the one pole feature because it would make it impossible to accidentally lose or forget a pole at home, and it's not more difficult to set up than a multi-pole system. I'm very happy with our purchase."

5.Review from Customer "PillyJilly":

"I bought this tent last month which replaced my old REI Taj 3. It's maiden use was on the beaches of Kauai, Hawaii. The tent was light weight for a 4-man tent, relatively easy to setup, and gave us great views of all of the different beaches we stayed on. Wish the pole setup was a little different instead of one, all inter-connected contraption that seemed a little awkward, but in the end it was still pretty easy to setup especially if two people were working together to do this. Also, it was super roomy for 2 people plus full backpacks and other gear all inside. Rainfly vestibule was pretty large too!"

6.Review from Customer "Colorado Native":

"While there are lighter 4 man tents on the market, this tent is fantastic for the price and the weight. (1lb 10 oz per person isn't bad.) I've been using it quite a bit now for two years with my kids (who can be a bit rough on things). I never use a ground sheet, I just select my site carefully and the bottom is still waterproof. The weather proofness really got tested one night when we were camped on the west side of Pikes Peak at 12,000 feet. A severe storm came in that lasted for several hours. The trail we hiked in on and the low area on the other side of our tent turned to rivers. We were on a small spit of ground as everything around us flooded. None of us slept well through the constant lightning and the noise of the rushing water around us. However we stayed perfectly dry in the tent. Fortunately I had seen the storm coming so I had guyed everything out which made the tent stand rock solid through it all. Some of the weight of this tent is the beefier aluminum poles. Usually larger tents really struggle with the wind, but I've been through some pretty tough winds with this as well and there isn't a bent spot in any of the poles. The hub setup takes a little getting used to, but once you figure it out it's a cinch. Just make sure your first time setting it up isn't at night or in a storm. I'm 6'3 and have no trouble fitting into this tent. With three of my kids (who aren't little anymore) everyone gets a side of a vestibule to put their pack and there's enough inside space and pockets to handle all the things you want in the tent with you. Is it a top of the line tent? No. Is it great bang for the buck? No doubt."

7.Review from Customer "NPSCamper":

"I bought this tent 2 yrs ago at the annual sale. I had done much research on 3 season back packing tents that were great in the rain after having several trips become uncomfortable due to leaking tents.. Almost every tent on the list was over $500! For half the price with a foot print, I was willing to take a chance. This tent is easy to set up and take down. It has ample room for 3 people, although with 4 it would be tight. It holds up well in the wind when properly staked. As for the rain protection, at Black Canyon of the Gunnison, it rained so hard with large hail, there was a stream running under the tent. Inside it was perfectly dry. What a difference a dry tent makes to your comfort. This was not the only wet adventure the tent has endured but it was the most severe example and it has stayed dry through every adventure. I would certainly recommend this tent to anyone looking for a well made tent that is easy to setup and great in the elements"

8.Review from Customer "srp2538":

"We love this tent! Our household has both the 2 person half dome and the 4 person. The four person fits my boyfriend and i comfortably along with our large dog. We had more than enough space for our bags too. Easy to set up, compact and light. The 2 person is 5lbs 1 oz. and the 4 person is 6lbs 12 oz... definitely worth the extra 2 lbs if you can manage. It was windy when we camped last and we didn't have any issues. This tent has SO many pockets!"

9.Review from Customer "big wave":

"Poles are useless and lost elasticity within 1 year. One. One year. This is absolute dumpster truck quality from REI and they offer you nothing to resolve it. For the question below "would you recommend this product?" No, I wouldn't. I would not recommend the entire company if this is how they stand up for their name-sake products."

10.Review from Customer "spencer":

"I just posted a utoob video on this tent, having used it in the backcountry for several years now. It's certainly heavier than most lighter tents, but we really love it for three people because of the comfort. We've been through rain and hail in this tent and never gotten wet. I'd certainly buy another one as it's easy to set up, break down, and pack."

Conclusion:

In summary, the REI Half Dome 4 stands out as a versatile and reliable option for those seeking a spacious and well-constructed tent. Its thoughtful design, which includes ample interior space, robust weather protection, and user-friendly features, makes it a strong contender in the realm of family and group camping gear. Whether you're embarking on a weekend getaway or a more extended outdoor excursion, the REI Half Dome 4 offers the comfort and durability needed to enhance your camping experience. While every camper's needs are unique, the REI Half Dome 4 provides a compelling mix of functionality and practicality that is likely to satisfy a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts.
